Angolan rebel leader Jonas Savimbi's party UNITA has announced that plans are underway to exhume his body and give him a dignified burial. This comes after UNITA leader Isaias Samakuva held a meeting with Angolan president Joao Lourenco in Luanda. UNITA and the ruling MPLA fought a bloody civil war for 27 years, until Savimbi's death in a gunfight in 2002. Prior to his death, the rebel leader had survived countless assassination attempts and eluded many traps set for him. His luck finally ran out when he was cornered in Moxico province, the place of his birth, by Angolan troops and shot at least 15 times. Many Angolans refused to believe he was dead, as this had been falsely reported before, and only did so after pictures of his bullet riddled body were broadcast.
Such an agreement would have been difficult under Jose Eduardo dos Santos' presidency. Savimbi and dos Santos were bitter rivals both politically and militarily. Since coming to power in September 2017, president Joao Lourenco has shown a surprising willingness to go against many of his predecessor's policies.
